Introverted Classmate (
Synopsis[]
The chapter begins with the present timeline. Haruki Shiga lies in bed with a book in hand, his mind drifting to thoughts of his deceased ex-classmate, Sakura Yamauchi. He receives a phone call from his mother, and requests that she cooks for him that day. Upon putting down his phone, he wonders if Sakura read his last text; I want to eat your pancreas.
After this the chapter dives into a flashback. Haruki sits in his classroom, his eyes on the pages of his book. As he closes it and rises from his seat, a classmate bumps into his shoulder as he's making his way to Sakura, but does not apologize. Haruki narrates that he never got a chance to get acquainted with Sakura, and defined their connection as nothing more than just classmates. He claims he had no interest in others, and doubted that anyone was interested in him. He narrates his daily life, which involves working at the library after class, and beliefs that his daily routine would ever change.
As he's arranging books, he is intercepted by Sakura, his fellow library assistant, who scolds him for not telling her that he was leaving. Haruki responds by saying he suspected she'd come on time if she didn't forget her duty. As she starts her library work, she tells Haruki that she wants to eat his pancreas.
Haruki is confused for a second, unsure whether she's talking to him or not. He then teases her by asking if she awakened her inner cannibal. Sakura explains something she saw on television the previous day; a belief that people ate an animal's organ if theirs got sick. Upon finding out that Sakura was referring to him, he bluntly turns her down by asking if she ever considered the fact that he would need it (his pancreas), to which Sakura responds by claiming that he probably didn't know what it does anyway.
Haruki responds by giving her a perfect dissection of the pancreas and its function in the human body, and says that he won't let her eat his pancreas, to which Sakura laughs and teases him. Haruki claims that normally he would pay attention to a classmate with a deadly illness. His older self from the present timeline narrates that he was the only classmate aware of Sakura and her secret at that time.
Following this is another flashback further in time, back to Haruki's visit to the hospital. As he's making his way past the lounge area, he stumbles upon a single book lying on one of the seats. Curious, he sits down and takes the book in his hand and looks at the cover to see the words Living with Dying. Having never heard of the book before, he opens it, only to see handwritten pages, and ponders over whether or not it was really a book.
He flips to a random page, and as his eyes scan the pages, he is surprised to find that the owner of the book has a secret, the secret being that they would die in a few years.
As he reads through the journal, he is intercepted by Sakura, who claims ownership of the journal, which seems to surprise him. Sakura asks him why he's in the hospital, to which Haruki replies that he was there to have his stitches from his appendectomy removed. Haruki makes an effort to pretend as though he is unaware of Sakura's disease, but is unsuccessful, as Sakura tells him that she's in the hospital for her pancreas check. Sakura then takes a seat next to him, asking if he's surprised. She then expresses her gratitude for Haruki finding the journal, saying that she was worried she may have lost it. Haruki asks if she's joking, to which Sakura bursts into uncontrollable laughter, and claims that it's true. She then tells Haruki that she's surprised that he remained calm even after finding out. Sakura then makes Haruki promise not to tell anyone in class, and he obliges, thus ending his first conversation with Sakura.
The next day, Sakura intercepts Haruki as he's walking through the hall, excitedly telling him that she was made an assistant in the library. Haruki is surprised, assuming that she didn't want to be talked to by him given the previous day's events. She then adds that it was nice meeting him.
While working at the library, Haruki asks Sakura if she really wanted to spend the last few moments of her life cleaning up a library, to which Sakura replies she would. She then asks Haruki if there's anything he wants to do before he dies, and Haruki says yes. Sakura asks him if he's done any of them, adding that he could die unexpectedly at anytime. Sakura says that they're similar, and says that a day's worth is all the same, adding that she had fun with Haruki.
She is then greeted by a fellow classmate, and is upset when he ignores Haruki. She tells Haruki she'll warn him tomorrow, and Haruki responds by pleading with her not to. Sakura scolds him by saying it's why he can't make friends, but is interrupted when Haruki says that they're at the gate. Sakura proposes that they meet up at the station a few days later. Haruki tries to reason with her, claiming he has a date, but Sakura insists that he comes, saying she'll write about it in her journal.
The chapter ends with Haruki considering whether or not he'd go to the station to meet with her, wondering how much time she has left.
