Fuyumi Shiga (
Appearance[]
Fuyumi's appearance is actually unknown due to her being novel-only, and all that the story reveals about her is that she's female and around high school age. However, since the novel's cover is an image of two girls that both match that description, it can be inferred that she's one of them and Anzu is the other. It is speculated that she's the girl with black hair on the right side.
Personality[]
Fuyu is initially a girl with a very pessimistic world-view, devaluing her life due to it being "ordinary" and fervently hoping for something out of the ordinary to happen to her. She doesn't seem to get on too well with her father, Haruki Shiga, at the beginning of the novel, due to her suspecting him of adultery and due to an argument they had over Fuyu's aforementioned views on life, but she's close to her childhood friend Anzu and the two talk and joke with each other as normal high school students do. Fuyu's also shown to have a strong sense of curiosity, which may be due to her wanting to find something out of the ordinary to pursue, as she goes as far as to tail her father for an entire day just to confirm or disprove a theory she has about him.
Later in the novel, however, she changes her view on life after hearing Sakura Yamauchi's story from Haruki, and learns to become more optimistic and to understand life better. She mends her relationship with her father and seems to be a lot happier for it.
Synopsis[]
Fuyu is the main protagonist of the novel. She claims that life is too average and boring, wanting to do something special and unique for once.
At the start of the novel, Fuyu arranges to meet up with her best friend, Anzu. She tells Anzu that her father, Haruki, might be having an affair, which strangely excites her, and the two end up arranging to 'stalk' Haruki for a day.
On that day, she and Anzu find her father waiting at the station for somebody, who turns out to be a young woman. After meeting up, they went into the station to get to the train. She and Anzu quickly enter the train and went to sit at another cabin to prevent getting caught by her father.
After a while, Haruki and the girl exit the train once it stops at a specific station, a station that Fuyu had not been to before and was unfamiliar with. She and Anzu exit at the same time, noting that the scenery is rural and hilly around the area, Fuyu describing it as "A place that's definitely not for dating purposes". The two follow Haruki up to a graveyard, and Fuyu becomes confused as to why he's visiting a grave that's marked with an unfamiliar name. She hears the woman accompanying him mention that Haruki should really tell his daughter about the "special someone" in his life, which prompts Anzu to expose where Fuyu was hiding and force her to confront him about her theories.
Haruki's shocked to see her there, but explains to her what his actual relationship with the woman, Ryoka Yamauchi, actually is, and that the person in the grave is a relative of hers. He tells the story of the time he and Sakura Yamauchi spent together before her untimely death. Fuyu asks him if he still has romantic feelings for Sakura, to which he replies he doesn't, and his relationship with her is something that can't really be described in words.
The day comes to an end, and Fuyu and Haruki talk about Sakura on the way home. Haruki apologizes to her about keeping quiet about important things, and then tells her that her existence is an extraordinary thing, and she shouldn't devalue it as she had done during their argument. Fuyu apologizes to him about her saying that, now understanding why it had upset him when she'd said all those things about life being boring, the two becoming closer through their shared knowledge of Haruki's story.
At the start of their summer break, Anzu's mother approves both of them going for a trip. Fuyumi smiles while thinking about what will happen to them in the future, much more optimistic now than she was at the beginning of the novel.
Relationships[]
Anzu[]
Anzu and Fuyu have been best friends since childhood. They seem to be very close, which may be due to the friendship between their parents, and they're often seen joking around together. Anzu is the person Fuyu first turns to when in need of help, and they're also presented as being very comfortable in each other's extended prescience, showcasing the closeness of their friendship.
Haruki Shiga[]
Their relationship is like a how a typical father act towards their daughter, but it becomes strained after Fuyu suspects that Haruki's having an affair, and after the argument they have over the value of life. After her father shares Sakura's story and through their meaningful conversation, however, both become closer than before.
Ryoka Yamauchi[]
Fuyu initially seems to resent Ryoka due to her being under the impression that Ryoka is either her father's mistress or his illegitimate child. Ryoka doesn't seem to notice this during the time Fuyu spends tailing her or while she's introducing herself to her, and is always seen to treat Fuyu with respect since she's the daughter of Ryoka's friend. Later, Fuyu learns of Ryoka's true relationship with Haruki and afterwards seems also to see her in a better light.
Trivia[]
